The McFarland girls volleyball team will have to wait till next year to continue their quest to state as they were shut down by the host Portage Warriors Tuesday, Oct. 20 in three sets.
McFarland seeded fifth met up with the fourth seeded Warriors, and played hard but just couldn't keep it going against some good kills. Also missing one of their top players in Melissa Wilkosz, the Spartans saw some players step up gaining valuable experience for next season but it wasn't enough.
The Spartans were in the first game even though they were down 4-0 to start the game, but they fought back and worked as a team and found a seam in the Warrior defense, but lost the first set 19-25.
In the second set, the Spartans just couldn't get anything going and got down early and couldn't recover as they fell 12-25. But the third set started off good for the Spartans as they stayed with the Warriors and played hard but just couldn't pull it out as they fell 18-25 in the third set.
Leading the Spartans in kills was Elizabeth Mahsem with 8, Shelly Scott with 7 and Jenna Blaser 5. Digger leaders were Amanda Sonday with 12, Michelle Witt 11 and J. Blaser and Courtney Frank each with 10.
The Spartans lost to a tough Portage team but they will return next year with more experience from playing tough teams.
