In a home meet for the McFarland girls swim team Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Spartans slipped past a tough Oregon team, pulling it together and rallying with some great times and team and pool records with an 89-81 win.
Starting off with a great start in the 200 medley relay, the Spartans' team of Chloe Bartuska, Stirling Smith, Alicia Krupsky and Leah Grinvalsky swam a great 2:07.80 setting a team and pool record. Taking third was the team of Hayley Bristol, Ally Schmaling, Hannah Klecker and Logan Heuer with their 2:16.08.
Continuing the great start was Bartuska as she records a nice first place in the 200 free with her 2:12.46. Nicole Riegert touched at 2:23.67 for a third place and Klecker finished fourth with a 2:27.11.
This got the Spartans off to a great start and with another first place, and setting another team and pool record was Smith with her 2:28.16 in the 200 IM. Schmaling took a fourth place with a 2:41.88.
With the win in this meet, the Spartans earned a second place in the southern dual meet standings with a 6-1 record and keeps their hopes alive for at least a share of the overall title. Milton is considered the favorite in the conference meet.
Just getting edged out of first in the 50 free was Grinvalsky as she finishes with a second place time of 28.43. In fifth was Heuer with a 30.34.
In the 100 fly, Krupsky keeps the Spartans going with her first place finish in 1:11.76. Then Grinvalsky follows up with her second place finish in the 100 free with a 1:03.99.
The Spartans get back on track as they follow up with Bartuska's second place team record swim in the 400 free as she touches with a 4:37.69 with Riegert finishing in fifth with her 5:00.35 time.
The Spartans are getting back on a roll as they set another team record in the 200 free relay with their first place time of 1:55.35 with Smith, Bartuska, Heuer and Grinvalsky.
The Spartans pretty much controlled the 100 back with Krupsky in first with her 1:13.27, the Bristol is right behind her in second with her 1:14.77 and Liz Duffey follows in fourth place with a 1:18.11.
McFarland's Smith and Schmaling finish one-two in the 100 breast as Smith takes first with her 1:15.98 and Schmaling second with a 1:22.64.
Something the Spartans haven't seen in a while is a second place in the 400 free relay, but the Oregon Panthers were very strong here as they overtook the Spartans. Krupsky started it off, Klecker second, Karali third and Kate Zobel brought up the rear with a second place 4:28.65.
A fourth place also came for the Spartans with Riegert, Duffey, Krista Fedor and Caitlin Alsmo with their 5:00.08 finish.
Overall, the Spartans came away with some great times and finishes as they start to prepare for the tournaments with the Badger Conference meet being held Oct. 30 in Stoughton. Then they prepare for sectionals in Baraboo.
